May Nurse Gary Floyd keep you well on this Election Day.

First things first, we’ve done a beautiful new update on the webstore and I think it just looks amazing. Massive thanks to Euan for the help on that front. It’s never looked better. I’ve been struggling with making this thing work the way I want it to and I think we’ve got something set up here for the foreseeable future that should be good. Second shoutout goes to Shelley for fixing some inventory situations that have been driving me crazy.

We have some new things in the shop that we’re excited about. We’re taking little baby-steps in putting our T-shirts online as well as putting some amazing books that are handpicked by us for your education and entertainment. Some of these have been in the brick and mortar for the last little while but I figure even though we can’t compete with “the devil”, we believe you are good people and that you’ll do the right thing and order these fine publications from a nice, small business like Neon Taste and not a place that tried to destroy the market for printed material and so much else.

Let me tell you, it’s hard out here and we’re trying our best.

Label News

Inferno Personale sleeves are done being silkscreened and we’ll be assembling and mailing these scorchers out over the next week. Check your favourite distro for copies or grab em right here! For fans of Wretched, Crude SS and other blistering European Hardcore. I love this record, I love this band. Members have spent time in bands like Ex-Dom and Muro. It absolutely rips.

In other news, the Closetalkers 7” is completely sold out from us with a handful of copies at Ebullition and Sorry State. We might do a repress but that won’t be until at least the new year. The band just came back from a handful of dates on the East coast that were great!

We’ve got a bit of a hold-up on a couple new releases that we want to get into preorder but honestly things are extremely tight right now, scarily even. With that in mind, we’re going to start putting some of the better LP’s and 7”s in the shop that have been sitting around waiting for locals to scoop since we opened. I was extremely against this because it just makes the physical store less special but the store and label also have to actually survive so here we are, this is the solution as I see it. You can expect those to drop slowly over the coming couple of weeks.

Inferno Personale - La Scelta é Tua LP
$27.00

With members from all over the globe but located in Bremen, Germany - Inferno Personale have been carving out potent Hardcore Punk in a tasty combination of Japanese crasher-crust and European Harcdcore ala Wretched or Crude SS. With members making up past and present lineups of Muro and Ex-Dom and more - it isn't so shocking to expect something with the kind of high energy and intensity so prevalent in this, their second 12". The fact is, on the last tour with Chain Whip through Europe, they were my favourite set and raised the bar on what this style should embody live. I recall the Sorry State team having a similar experience with them while on their first tour out that way. Inferno Personale is an absolute explosion of high energy Hardcore exactly the way I like it. This is a co-release with France's Symphony Of Destruction so if you're out that way - order from them.

Alien Nosejob - Turns The Color Of Bad Shit LP
$29.00

Only 10 measly months has passed sinceAlien Nosejob released their Garage Rock record “The Derivative Sounds of…Or… A Dog Always Returns to its Vomit” (Goner / Anti Fade). Since its release, there’s been two international tours, two interstate tours and a bunch of chillaxing on the beach. ANJ is now back in the office and the next record is fast approaching.

“Turns the Colour of Bad Shit” will be Jake Robertson’s seventh solo record under the extremely vast and evolving umbrella that is Alien Nosejob. On September 20 Anti Fade Records (AU), Total Punk (US) & DrunkenSailor (UK) join forces to split the shit pie into three different shades ofBad Shit and feed the 5000 hungry fans across the globe.

Taking musical inspiration from the late 70’s punk sounds of J.T. IV, Elton Motello, X-Ray Spex, ‘Bad Shit' came to life in April 2023 when Jake occupied friends’ Mikey and Raven’s home studio for a weekend and took to the controls on his own.

The album opens with the gut-wrenching terror that is 'Bird Strike’. A song made up of a hypnotic riff, haunting saxophone line (courtesy of Alannah Sawyer) and grotesque lyrical imagery that parallels Revee Bendixen's mutilated album artwork. 'Trapped in Time' lightens the mood with an upbeat tempo and words that poke fun at those stuck living in the past, while 'Annoying Riffs' points the finger at almost all of society (including himself). Jake reminds us that he can most certainly play a guitar solo (In case anyone forgot the Stained Glass record) on 'The Ostrich’ before the blistering 24 minutes wraps up with ‘Medical Treatment’; a 3 minute, minor chord Birdman worship. This record has a little something for everybody.

Alien Nosejob Turns the Colour of BadShit September 20, 2024. Get your copy via Anti Fade (AU), Total Punk (US) orDrunken Sailor (UK).

Total Punk New Releases!

Circulators play Punk ‘n’ Roll that was pioneered by bands like Crime and then had the 90’s amphetamine pace of Zodiac Killers (or any other Ripoff Records bands) added to it. I’m a sucker for any of this stuff if it’s not just boring-ass, lazy performances and luckily Circulators have the speed and snot that’s required for this kinda boogie. If you’re a fan of any of those aforementioned bands or you want a slightly different seasoning than what Sick Thoughts serve up, then I’d recommend hitting it.

If you’re looking for yet more Alien Nosejob, we’ve got the new LP (and second one this year!) ready to roll. It’s nothing like the Garage Rock album released earlier this year. As with any Alien Nosejob records, it’s best to listen with fresh ears, drop any preconceptions of what you think you might get. It’s always a trip and it’s always worthwhile. This one is all over the place but firmly in the Punk spectrum. Not Post-Punk, not Hardcore, not Garage. Just straight up Punk Rock music. The outlier is the intro track which has some epic keyboard lines that really fill the track out.

Other new stuff!

The Great Unwashed are a group that formed alongside The Clean. This LP was originally released in 1983 and has been out of print for over a decade. Meds Records, ran by Scott Simmons of Lavender Flu has done another run. Lo-fi, Pop-psychedelia the way you’d expect from a label like Flying Nun and members of The Clean. Nice to have these records available for an affordable price as originals are gonna cost you over $200.

Marked Men restocks for the compilation LP, ‘On The Other Side’ as well as their 4th full length ‘Ghosts’ are here. Radioactivity was just recently here in Calgary and they were fabulous as always. I think I’ve bought and sold personal copies of Marked Men albums more than any other contemporary band always thinking that I’ve had my time with them before one of their hooks worms their way into my brain and reminds me that they are indeed one of the better melodic punk bands around.

New Books In Stock!

We’ll be stocking some highly curated books in the realm of curiosity, music and art. For the initial offerings, we have some Punk bios, Occult and Medical art books as well as a couple Nick Blinko books.
You can check them all out by searching “book” in the dropdown in the store. Here’s this weeks recommendations:

The Anatomical Venus: Wax, God, Death & the Ecstatic’ by Joanna Ebenstein

" The first book of its kind, The Anatomical Venus , by Morbid Anatomy Museum cofounder Joanna Ebenstein, features over 250 images―many never before published―gathered by its author from around the world. Its extensively researched text explores the Anatomical Venus within her historical and cultural context in order to reveal the shifting attitudes toward death and the body that today render such spectacles strange. It reflects on connections between death and wax, the tradition of life-sized simulacra and preserved beautiful women, the phenomenon of women in glass boxes in fairground displays, and ideas of the ecstatic, the sublime and the uncanny.
Joanna Ebenstein is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, writer, lecturer and graphic designer. She originated the Morbid Anatomy blog and website, and is cofounder (with Tracy Hurley Martin) and creative director of the Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn, New York. She is coauthor of Walter Potter’s Curious World of Taxidermy , with Dr. Pat Morris; coeditor of The Morbid Anatomy Anthology , with Colin Dickey; and acted as curatorial consultant to Wellcome Collection’s Exquisite Bodies exhibition in 2009. She has also worked with such institutions as the New York Academy of Medicine, the Dittrick Museum and the Vrolik Museum.”

13th Floor Elevators: A Visual History’ by Paul Drummond

Before the hippies, before the punks, there were the 13th Floor Elevators: an unlikely crew of outcast weirdo geniuses who changed culture. Paul Drummond has spent years documenting every aspect of the history of this amazing band and amassing an unprecedented archive of primary materials, resulting in this comprehensive visual history. The book recounts the story not just of the Elevators as a band--wild and remarkable though it is--but that of the American counterculture itself: the hallucinogens, the rebellion and the truly profound music that resulted. The 13th Floor Elevators: A Visual History places the band finally and undeniably in the pantheon of innovators of American rock music to which they have always belonged.

Art Retrospective’ and ‘Primal Screamer’ by Nick Blinko

Art Retrospective’ includes over 130 pieces of art by Nick on newsprint style paper in a large format. There is a similar version of this book on-demand from Amazon but the copies we have are far superior in quality. It also features an essay by Colin Rhodes, the foremost authority on Outsider Art. ‘Primal Screamer’ has been around for years and I remember getting a copy when I was about 14 which was promptly lent out and then lost to the sands of punk. A somewhat biographical account of Blinko moving from the psych-ward to squats to the burgeoning Anarcho Punk scene before devolving into Lovecraftian horror. A perfect read for the season change into the colder months and even if you’re not a big reader, this is compact and captivating enough that it’s worth a shot. I have a hard time making time to read but even I can hack this one even though it’s hardly got any pictures.

New Leather Gear from Primitive Ritual!

We’ve teamed up with Primitive Ritual out of Boston to bring you some quality leather goods as well as some jewelry. Just give Primitive Ritual a search on the store page and you’ll see what’s on offer. All excellent quality.

Hopefully you can find something here worth sinking you teeth/wallet into. I do appreciate the support and hope that I can continue to bring in and promote things that are worthwhile - whatever they are. Thank you again from the very bottom of my filthy heart.

Marked Men - Ghosts LP
$30.00

The fourth full-length album from THE MARKED MEN. Blurring the rawness and velocity of their self-titled debut with the slightly more developed songwriting "chops" of the last two, the Marked Men have truly delivered the best of both worlds. Since their debut album came out on Rip Off in 2002 (reissued in 2008 on Dirtnap!), the Marked Men have established themselves as one of the best, most distinctive, compelling, and instantly recognizable punk bands of the 2000's.

Marked Men - On The Other Side LP
$30.00

On The Other Side collects all non-album tracks released by The Marked Men, originally released in the period between 2003 and 2010 on labels such as Dirtnap, Swami, No Idea, Shit Sandwich, and Mortville, plus two never-before-heard unreleased tracks from deep in the vault. It’s hard to believe that it’s been close to fifteen years since Dirtnap first released a Marked Men record. Since then, the label has done close to twenty releases by the band member’s various bands (Marked Men, Radioactivity, High Tension Wires, Potential Johns, Mind Spiders). Counting the releases Mark Ryan and / or Jeff Burke have had a hand in recording, that number goes even higher. It’s a relationship that continues to this day; if there is / has been a “flagship band” for the label, Marked Men and their various offshoots are it. Although they continue to play a handful of shows each year, the band hasn’t released any new material since 2009 (the last album came out in 2008), and they have no plans to do so, so this compilation is as close to a new album as one is going to get. The band’s affinity for fast, choppy power chords and manic energy is in evidence here, as the band stretches its legs throughout these solid closing credits and shows why they were one of the leaders of a sound that has never gone (or will go) out of style.
